Sonday Reading Intervention

The Sonday Reading System is a structured, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and spelling, especially designed for children and adults with learning difficulties like dyslexia. It was developed by Susan Sonday, who was inspired by the success of the Orton-Gillingham method, which focuses on phonics and the relationship between sounds and letters.

Key Features of the Sonday System:

  1. Multi-sensory Approach: The system engages multiple senses (sight, sound, touch) to help students process and retain information. For example, students might trace letters while saying the sounds out loud.
  2. Explicit Phonics Instruction: The program is based on systematic and explicit phonics instruction. Students are taught the rules of phonics in a structured order, moving from simple to more complex concepts.
  3. Structured and Sequential: The curriculum is laid out in a step-by-step fashion, which helps build skills gradually. It begins with basic letter sounds and progresses to more complex word structures and spelling patterns.
  4. Reinforcement: The Sonday System involves plenty of review and reinforcement to ensure mastery of concepts before moving on to more advanced material.
  5. One-to-One Instruction: We deliver this program exclusively one-to-one which allows us to pace the lessons based on the progress of the individual student

Components of the Program:

  • Sonday 1*: For early readers or beginners, focusing on phonics, letters, and simple words.
  • Sonday 2*: For intermediate students, with more complex sounds, multisyllabic words, and spelling rules.

Ideal for:

  • Students with dyslexia
  • Struggling readers or those with reading delays
  • Students in need of intensive phonics-based instruction

The program’s goal is to help learners become fluent, confident readers and spellers. It’s often used in schools, tutoring centers, and therapy settings for those who require additional support in literacy skills.

*Each level requires a minimum of 60 hours of 1-to-1 Reading Intervention. All services are provided by Sonday Trained Credentialed Teachers.
